The Silent Church: Christian Apathy and its Devastating Consequences

A sign that says "who cares"

In a world filled with political turmoil and moral decay, the church's and its believers' role has never been more critical. However, there is a growing concern about the apathy that seems to have infected the Christian community, leading to a silent church that remains indifferent to the pressing issues of our time. What are the implications of Christian apathy, its reasons, and its devastating consequences on the church and society?

What is Apathy, and Why Does it Matter?

Apathy can be defined as a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. In the context of the Christian community in culture, it refers to a disengagement from societal and political issues, leading to a passive and indifferent approach to matters that significantly impact our world. This apathy is concerning because it goes against the very essence of God's purpose for the born-again believer, which calls for active participation and engagement in the world.

How, then, can people call on someone they have not believed? And how can they believe in someone they have not heard about? And how can they hear without someone preaching? 15 And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are those who bring the good news!" Romans 10:14-15

The Rise of Apathy in the Church

The roots of Christian apathy can be traced back to various factors. One is the misconception that politics is messy and that Christians should avoid it. This misguided belief has led many believers to disengage from the political sphere, leaving a void filled by those who do not share the same values and principles. Additionally, the focus on personal spirituality and salvation has overshadowed the call to be salt and light in the world, resulting in a silent church that fails to make a tangible impact in our culture.

The Bible clearly states that anyone who knows what is right but fails to do it is guilty of sin, James 4:17. This truth is relevant, especially in today's political and cultural landscape. One of the most pressing issues in our society is the topic of abortion. The Bible unequivocally teaches that life begins at conception and that every life is precious in the eyes of God, Psalm 139: 13-16. Therefore, as Christians, we have a moral obligation to stand up for the rights of the unborn and work towards protecting and preserving their lives.

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalms 139:13-16

Abandoning Biblical Values

One of the most devastating consequences of Christian apathy is the abandonment of biblical values in the public sphere. When believers remain silent on issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, and religious freedom, society is left without a moral compass. The lack of a strong Christian voice allows for the erosion of fundamental principles essential for a just and flourishing society.

In politics, this biblical principle should guide our decision-making and actions. It is not enough to know what is right; we must actively promote righteous policies and advocate for justice. This means voting for candidates who align with biblical values and supporting initiatives that uphold the sanctity of life. By doing so, we are fulfilling our Christian duty and working towards creating a culture that reflects God's righteousness.

Allowing Evil to Prevail

By remaining silent, the church inadvertently allows evil to prevail. In the face of injustice, oppression, and immorality, the silent church fails to speak up for the voiceless and defend the vulnerable. The consequences of this silence are far-reaching, affecting not only the present generation but also future ones who will inherit a society shaped by the church's apathy.

In his thought-provoking book, "Letter to the American Church," Eric Metaxas draws a chilling parallel between the German church during the Holocaust and the state of the American church today. He highlights the haunting silence of the German church as millions of Jews were being persecuted and killed, urging Christians to learn from history and not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Losing the Next Generation

The impact of apathy is particularly evident in the younger generation. Young Christians can become disillusioned and disenchanted with the faith when the church fails to address relevant issues and provide meaningful biblical guidance. This disconnection can lead to a departure from the church, as many seek answers and solutions elsewhere, like schools, colleges, and social media. The loss of the next generation is a grave consequence of Christian apathy that cannot be ignored.

Equipping Believers for Engagement

The church must rediscover the biblical mandate to actively engage in the world to overcome apathy. Jesus modeled this when he confronted the religious and political authorities of his time. By following his example, believers can reclaim their role as agents of change and transformation in society.

The church has a responsibility to equip its members for engagement in the public sphere. Pastors and leaders must provide the necessary tools, resources, and guidance to help believers navigate the complexities of politics and culture. This includes fostering critical thinking, promoting biblical literacy, and encouraging active involvement in political processes.

Christian apathy is a pressing issue that cannot be ignored. The consequences of a silent church are far-reaching and have a detrimental impact on the church and society. It is time for believers to awaken from their apathy, rediscover their calling, and actively engage in the world. By embracing the truth of the Bible, prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit, the Church can impact the world. Let us not be silent, but instead, let us be the voice of truth, justice, and love that our world so desperately needs.
