Proposition 1: Do You Know The Text?

California governor Gavin Newsom giving a speech.

Why should Californians, Christians, and other faith groups, oppose Proposition 1?

California is one of the most anti-child States in the country. Proposition 1 is a reflection of the outlandish legislative policies against children to date (AB 2223, SB 107, SB 1375, SB 1142). This proposition will enshrine the legalization of abortion up till birth in the California Constitution.

SEC. 1.1. The state shall not deny or interfere with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives. This section is intended to further the constitutional right to privacy guaranteed by Section 1, and the constitutional right to not be denied equal protection guaranteed by Section 7. Nothing herein narrows or limits the right to privacy or equal protection.

Don’t be mistaken, the overturning of Roe v Wade earlier this year only ushered the abortion issue to the States, and governor Gavin Newsom of the State of California has ramped up his determination to allow easy access to abortion for Californians and residents from other states. He’s made it clear across the country by advertising on billboards, “California is ready to help.” Those seeking abortion from out of State are welcomed, and he has streamlined the abortion process with his newly created website with resources and information.

It’s all in the text

AB 2223, formerly known as the infanticide bill, would have allowed the killing of babies weeks after birth. The text “perinatal death due to a pregnancy-related cause” ("perinatal” can be defined as a number of weeks after birth) was amended. Buffy Wicks, who crafted AB 2223 was hoping the text would be overlooked but had it not been for the diligence of the opposition; the bill would not have been amended.

And so, as we are months away before this proposition will be placed on the California ballot, legislators supported by Newsom are advertising the right of abortion, health care, woman's choice, and reproductive rights. Those who support abortion may find this proposition the path for women's liberation, but do read the fine print - and that is abortion till birth, abortion on demand, and at any stage of development.

Here are some of the major supporters and donors of Proposition 1. These five donors alone have contributed 1.8 million dollars.

  • Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County

  • California Federation of Teachers COPE Prop/Ballot Committee

  • ACLU of Northern California Issues Committee

  • CA Teachers Association Issues PAC

  • M. Quinn Delaney

There is hope in Californians

As liberal and left-leaning as our politicians are in California, surveys show that residents have different opinions on abortion.

KEY INSIGHT: 79 percent of California likely voters say abortion should be limited to within the first six months of pregnancy:

  • 32 percent say abortion should be legal up to three months of a pregnancy

  • 19 percent say abortion should be legal up to the first month of pregnancy

  • 14 percent say abortion should be legal up to six months of a pregnancy

  • 14 percent say abortion should be illegal

  • 13 percent say abortion should be legal at any time during pregnancy

  • 9 percent are not sure

Theoretically, based on this survey alone, Proposition 1 should not pass. But, if the bill does, I assume California voters do, in fact, support abortion to full term. But I am skeptical and more inclined to believe that voters, and sadly Christians are following the abortion trend advocated by our politicians, celebrities, and leaders and not reading the text of the proposition.

Voters need to know the text on Proposition 1

If anyone believes there are term limits to abortion in California, you'll be surprised! Proposition 1 will certainly enshrine a text in the California constitution that will virtually cease all rights from the unborn up until birth and effectively offer abortion on demand.

No child should be discriminated against based on health, economic, social, or convenience. As a Christian father, husband, and follower of Jesus, I find it unconscionable and inexcusable to vote yes on Proposition 1. Every child deserves life.

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”

Matthew 19:14

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.

Proverbs 14:34
